CANTON E.O. LAWRENCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students conducted a penny drive for two weeks beginning on May 1, 2001 with the understanding that the Student Council would match student donations.  Students raised $638.79 in the penny drive.  The Parent and Teachers Connecting and Helping Every Student (PATCHES) organization supplied penny containers and helped organize the assembly.  The students learned a great deal about WWII as a result of this fundraiser.

Amount Raised:  $1277.58

WW2 Vets Speak to EOL Students and Staff by Nick Skinner

We had an assembly for the WW2 Vets on May 1. It was called "Kick off your Pennies for Vets". South Dakota is building a memorial in Pierre for World War 2 vets. They gave buckets to each classroom and asked each student to bring pennies up until May 14. We will count the pennies then send them to the governor of South Dakota, Mr. Janklow. Devin Dykstra's grandfather was one of the veterans. The others are Orval Sievers, Kerwin Ulrikson and Daryl Halling. Everyone at the assembly sang the song, God Bless the USA, which was lead by Paul Sogn. Boys and girls are very excited and are bringing lots of pennies. We are pouring them into a big container by the lunchroom every day. Student council will match pennies we bring. (Pictured above are the veterans who attended the assembly.
