South Dakota World War II Memorial Fund in Pierre.
(coordinated, organized, sponsored by Sheila Hansen, SMS)
The Spearfish Middle School raised $380 by sponsoring an 8th grade dance, $225 was donated by funds raised through the sale of “Fallen Sons of SD” books and $400 was donated by the Spearfish Middle School Student Council. The Spearfish Middle School for the past three years has researched and written biographies of over 400 South Dakotans that gave their lives in World War II. Annually, they publish a book known as the “Fallen of Sons of South Dakota” which is a compilation of the biographies. The students write to local newspapers, veterans groups, etc. to find out information about the veteran. The students have generously allowed this collection to be made available on the SD World War II Memorial website at www.sdwwiimemorial.com and will be available at a kiosk at the Visitor Center adjacent to the new constructed Memorial.
