Died At Sea / Lost off the coast of North Africa
Francis Levi Bird was born on October 11th,
1922 in Sisseton, South Dakota to Josiah and Lorene (Harlan) Bird. His paternal
grandparents were Joseph and Susan (Greeley) Bird. Francis attended school in
Sisseton then later moved to Hastings, Nebraska, where he graduated from high
Francis enlisted on December 2, 1942, at
Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine.
One year later Merchant Marine Frances Levi Bird
was reported as missing in action (MIA) and later killed in action on December
2, 1943. The Navy Department reported his ship had been torpedoed by a German
U-boat (submarine) off the coast of North Africa. Francis had just turned
twenty-one years old.
Memorial services were held at St. Peter’s
Catholic Church in Sisseton on Memorial Day, 1944. His body was lost at sea and
was never recovered.
