Jean Alden Bly was born
February 13, 1925 to Clarence and Blanche Bly in Garretson, South Dakota.
Growing up, Jean was involved in 4-H and raising livestock. He enjoyed judging
hogs and cattle. He graduated from Brookings High School in 1943.
Jean enlisted in the
United States Marines in Oceanside, California on June 27, 1944. He took his
boot camp training in San Diego, California. He was home for a brief furlough
after his boot training. He died of bronchial pneumonia on September 18, 1944
while stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. He was only 19 years of age.
Private Bly is buried in
Palisades Cemetery in Garretson, South Dakota. His parents, one sister, Joann
and four brothers, Richard, Lester, Bernie and Ray Bly survived him.
