Clarence Ervin Allstot

Clarence Ervin Allstot was born in Aurora, South Dakota on April 2, 1922 to parents William K. and Verna E. Allstot. William and Verna had ten children named, Elmer, Dorothy, Clarence, Margaret, Delvin, William (called Billy), Joyce, Robert, Norman, and Helen. The Allstotís moved to Arlington, South Dakota and made it their home in 1927. They left Arlington to return to Aurora in 1933 where the children attended a country school.  Here Clarence graduated from the eighth grade, his last year of school.   He did odd jobs around town, but never had full time employment.  The family returned to Brookings in 1937.

On November 10, 1942 Clarence married Anna Mae Franklin. They never had any children because Clarence left for the war about two days later. Anna has since passed away.

Before Clarence left for the military, he told one of his friends that he knew he would have been drafted if he hadnít enlisted. He also told his friend that because of the severity of the war, he knew he would not be coming back to South Dakota alive. Clarence enlisted in the service on June 30, 1942. After training at Fort Benning, in Georgia, Clarence was stationed in Germany, where he was part of an I-A Tanker Division.

Clarence perished on October 29, 1944 in Germany, as he was inside a tanker when it was shot. Clarence was awarded the Purple Heart, and was originally buried in a mass grave in Germany before he was moved to the Netherlands Cemetery following the war.

Current survivors of the Allstot family are, sister, Dorothy Trygstad of California, who attended Madison Normal Teacherís School in Madison, South Dakota, before moving to California, sister, Joyce Buckley of Oklahoma, and brother, Norman Allstot of Arizona, who graduated from State College in Brookings, South Dakota, before too entering the war.
