William Dempsey Austin

William Dempsey Austin was born July 23, 1919, at Merriman, Nebraska. His parents were Seth and Harriet Austin. He grew up and worked in the Martin, South Dakota area. He also worked construction around Alliance, Nebraska. On December 4, 1940, he married Bulah Amiotte; they had one daughter, Barbara Jean, who was born July 8, 1944.

Mr. Austin entered the service September 18, 1942, at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He left the United States for foreign service on October 14, 1944, and was killed in action in

Germany on February 8, 1945, while serving as a Staff Sergeant, Company K, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division.

Although he had lived in Martin, South Dakota for most of his life, his mother had moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and his wife and child were living in North Carolina at the time of his death. He is listed as a Logan County casualty on the World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing: State of Nebraska publication.
